Scala Technology has developed audio compression algorithms that achieve fast, efficient, error-resilient coding with fine-grain bitrate scalability, with applications in internet audio streaming, mobile multimedia communication, and audio archiving.

Scala is owned by Chris Dunn, who holds a PhD in audio signal processing and has twenty years experience of developing a wide range of audio technologies.

Scala was formed in 2000 with the award of development funding from the then UK Department of Trade and Industry. Further support has been received from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA).
